My Award-Winning Experience: Rachel Lee

Undefined

Rachel is an ST4 Obstetrics and Gynaecology trainee who won the 2016 ‘Wales Deanery BEST Award for Outstanding Contribution to Training’ after being nominated by her training programme director. In her own words, this what it felt like for her to participate in the event:

“It came totally out the blue; I was chuffed to bits, and it felt like validation for all the hard work I had been doing. I think there is a perception that we should work hard and keep our heads down, and that to look for praise or talk about being proud of our achievements is bad taste; the BEST Trainee Awards fly in the face of that perception. They are a wonderful way to recognise trainees that go the extra mile in many different ways, and give us something to work towards.

“After I had been nominated, I was asked to write a statement of support, and from this, shortlists for interviews were drawn up. Going for the interview with Professor Donnelly and the panel was quite a daunting prospect (especially post nightshifts!) but I enjoyed talking about my projects with people at the “top”, who seemed genuinely interested in my ideas. Preparing for the interview required me to really reflect on all the things I had been doing, and it was then I realised that I had actually achieved quite a lot in a relatively short space of time.

“The award ceremony itself was a great and glamorous celebration. I got to speak to the Cabinet Secretary, Vaughan Gething, which was an amazing opportunity, and I networked with lots of people with similar interests to me. I really loved hearing about all the other nominee’s achievements; there is so much going on in Wales and through Wales’s trainees that we never hear about!

“Winning the BEST Award was a complete shock to me, and I was absolutely delighted! It has definitely boosted my confidence, and has made me even more determined to continue championing trainees, and to help develop medical training in Wales.”

If you are a Head of School, then you are eligible to nominate any trainees whom you feel have made outstanding contributions to the medical profession here in Wales.
