At this year's BMJ Career's Fair, 21-22 October in Islington, Wales adopted a different approach to previous years. Rather than having a fragmented approach through a number of smaller Health Board stands, we commissioned a larger single presence under the 'This is Wales - Train.Work.Live' banner. The stand was close to the main entrance and attracted a record number of around 270 interested visitors. The 'single point of contact' principle was employed to record contact details of interested doctors for ease of follow up and sign-posting.
Our recruitment campaign has highlighted that the scale of operational activity in Wales is such that it brings key and senior players at a national level closer to each other and to the service. This was demonstrated in action at the Fair by the presence of our new CMO, our Director General of NHS Wales, senior members of Welsh Government Workforce and OD team, senior Deanery members, Health Board Medical Directors, our Shared Services team and by a strong and enthusiastic presence and contribution from consultants and trainees across Wales.
In all, this felt like a major step forward which clearly demonstrated a cohesive and collaborative approach. While it is too early to identify success in terms of recruitment numbers, there has been a demonstrable advantage over the activity of previous years which is likely to result in a similar approach in future years.
