Varied programme attracts high turnout for SAS Conference


A large number of delegates attended the 16th SAS Doctors’ and Dentists’ conference at the Copthorne Hotel in Cardiff on 30th January, where they enjoyed a varied programme of presentations and workshops throughout the day.

Dental CPD Roadshow


The Dental Postgraduate Department of the Wales Deanery are running roadshows around Wales to highlight forthcoming changes to the General Dental Council Enhanced Continuing Professional Development (ECPD) scheme.

Changes will be happening from 1 January 2018 for Dentists, and from 1 August 2018 for Dental Care Professionals.

The Wales Deanery invites you to come along to any of these events to learn about what the changes mean for you and your team – so that everyone can be best prepared to meet the new requirements.


Dementia event showcases innovation and collaboration


An innovative training event held on Wednesday 22nd November saw the coming together of professionals from General Practice, Pharmacy, Dentistry and Optometry to consider possible interventions to help patients with dementia. The interactive session was made possible with the collaboration of the Wales Deanery, WOPEC, and WCPPE and attracted an audience of over 60, with a further 137 livestreaming the event.

Dr Ilona Johnson

Ilona is a Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Dental Public Health. She is the Deputy Director for Assessment across all taught programmes and is the lead for student experience and engagement within the School of Dentistry. Ilona's role involves teaching, research and Dental Public Health consultant practice. She is an avid learner and teacher with a particular enthusiasm for developing innovative educational opportunities and learning experiences. This year Ilona was awarded a prestigious Higher Education Academy National Teaching Fellowship.

Holistic care for people living with dementia in the community


A unique multidisciplinary training event around the holistic care of people living with dementia in the community is to be held on Wednesday 22nd November at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.

Case Study: Mark Taubert


We asked previous winners of the BEST Trainer Awards to give us more information on what they did after winning. Dr Mark Taubert, Clinical Director/Consultant in Palliative Medicine at the Velindre Cancer Centre, and winner of BEST Trainer Award 2016 and BMJ/BMA Clinical Teacher of the Year, discussed his work with VR technology in palliative care.
