The BEST and BSAS awards are an initiative to honour Wales' best educational supervisor, trainer and Staff Associate Specialist (SAS) doctor.
Now in their seventh year, the Awards pay tribute to GPs, consultants, dentists and SAS doctors who have demonstrated excellence in the role of trainer or postgraduate medical and dental education in Wales.
Last year Welsh doctors were honoured by the Wales Deanery at an event hosted by the British Medical Association (BMA) in Cardiff’s Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. The successful nominees were rewarded with accolades for their excellence in training the next generation of medical and dental professionals across Wales.
The following healthcare professionals were named BEST trainers of the year 2015: Dr Alison Van Buren, GP at Townsgate Surgery, Newport; Dr Harsha Reddy, Consultant in Critical Care at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, Dr Farid Ghalli, Specialty Doctor in Nephrology at UHW and Dr Madhuri Kodliwadmath, Associate Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at West Wales General Hospital.
Professor Chris Callander was presented with the Dean’s Recognition Award for his services to Medical Education. Professor Callander is currently the Sub Dean of Quality & Governance and he has led the revision of the Wales Deanery commissioning process with Local Education Providers ensuring alignment with the latest GMC national Training Standards. Chris is also a Consultant Anaesthetist at the Royal Gwent Hospital and has been Head of the Welsh School of Anaesthesia for the last 6 years.
The awards are part of the ‘Supervising the Route to Excellence’ programme which aims to ensure excellence in medical training through the development and support of high quality educational, clinical supervisors and trainers throughout Wales. They are now part of the BMA/BMJ Clinical Teacher of the Year Awards, which is a collaboration between Cardiff Medical School, Swansea Medical School & the Wales Deanery.
Nominations are now open for the 2016 BEST/BSAS Awards and submissions can be made up until 28th October 2016. Please click on the link below to make a nomination:
