It was with great sadness that BSSU said farewell to Paul Kirk as he stepped down from his role as the Unit’s Manager in December 2017.
Paul managed the Business Systems Support Unit for over twelve years. In that time he oversaw the provision of a number of key services and software programmes which support and facilitate Deanery business, and led on software governance and quality. Paul and the rest of the team achieved this by working closely with colleagues in the Deanery and other stakeholders when required. Paul also oversaw the Unit’s successful transition from an e-learning unit to systems support in February 2014.
Paul graduated with an Honours Degree in Physics, Maths & Computing in 1979 before achieving a Postgraduate Certificate in Education at Reading University. He taught in secondary schools and became Head of a computing department in 1983. Paul was self-employed for 12 years as an I.T. Training Consultant and Software Developer, then worked in Further Education colleges, gaining an MSc in E-Learning at the University of Glamorgan in 2002.
Paul worked as a Postgraduate Medical Educationalist in a Local Health Board before his appointment as E-learning Unit Manager at the Wales Deanery. In this role Paul worked closely with a number of external agencies to support and develop Postgraduate Learning & Teaching Online (PLATO), part of Learning@NHSWales which hosts and delivers electronic education and training services for doctors, often in a multidisciplinary context.
Although Paul will be sorely missed as Manager of BSSU, he continues to play an active role as the I.T. Workstream Lead in readiness for the Deanery’s transfer to Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) later this year.
